LEESBURG, VA. – The American Wood Council's (AWC) Prescriptive Residential Deck Construction Guide: DCA 6 has been updated to include commentary and a new appendix.
Both the commentary and appendix are integrated into the free guide and can be downloaded at: http://www.awc.org/codes-standards/decks.
"Unfortunately, deck collapses are not an uncommon occurrence in the United States," said AWC Vice President of Technology Transfer John "Buddy" Showalter, P.E. "These additions to DCA 6 encourage compliant deck design and help ensure that both minimum material requirements and prescriptive limits are taken into consideration. It is important that construction of the deck then follow the design carefully and precisely."
The commentary provides background information, alternate provisions and example calculations, such as joist capacity criteria, 4'x4' posts and footing calculations. The new appendix provides a tributary area method for calculating post and footing sizes providing more flexibility and efficiency.
A recent AWC webinar provided an overview of the new provisions and a recorded version is available as part of AWC's self-directed study program. Both ICC preferred provider and AIA continuing education credits are available.
