Load Resistance Factor Design

2005 NDS

NDS

The 2005 Edition of the National Design Specification for Wood Construction was published first quarter of 2005. The 2005 NDS was developed as a dual format specification incorporating both allowable stress design (ASD) and load and resistance factor design (LRFD). The 2005 NDS replaces both the 2001 NDS and the 1996 LRFD Manual.

LRFD Manual

LRFD

The Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) Manual for Engineered Wood Construction, 1996 Edition provides a comprehensive guide for the design of engineered wood structures. The manual incorporates the AF&PA/ASCE 16-95 Standard for Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) for Engineered Wood Construction, along with 5 supplements and 4 guidelines.

In addition to the AF&PA/ASCE 16-95 Standard the LRFD Manual contains several sections explaining provisions of the standard, including example problems. Over 40 details are included in the chapter on connections. Additionally, 6 case studies outlining the use of traditional and engineered wood products in commercial, industrial, and retail structures are incorporated.

There are several supplements and guidelines packaged with the LRFD Manual similar to what is done with the NDS and NDS Supplement. Supplements are documents that contain design values, like those for structural lumberglued laminated timber, poles and piles, connections, and structural-use panels. Guidelines cover proprietary products like I-joiststructural composite lumbertrusses, and pre-engineered metal connectors. While Guidelines do not contain design values, they do incorporate valuable information on applying LRFD principles to proprietary wood products. Incorporation of design and construction details that are applicable to both allowable stress design and LRFD (e.g., 20 I-Joist design and construction details) make the LRFD Manual an essential desk reference for any designer.

ASCE

The AF&PA/ASCE 16-95 Standard for Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) for Engineered Wood Construction was approved in November 1995 as a consensus standard through the ASCE standards development process. It is currently approved by several model building codes.
