AWC Statement on USDA's biobased final rule

Aug 04, 2014

WASHINGTON, D.C. – American Wood Council President and CEO Robert Glowinski has issued the following statement regarding the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Friday release of a final rule on the BioPreferred program that, among other changes, deletes the mature market language from the regulation. The 2014 Farm Bill includes language on the Biobased Program that explicitly states forest products are eligible biobased products and recognizes ways in which innovation can be demonstrated in those products.

"You can't get much more biobased than wood products. The final rule USDA released removed the 'mature market' restriction, allowing more opportunities for wood products to apply for the BioPreferred program.

"There have been remarkable, innovative advances in how the industry processes its forest resources with technology that includes log scanning, vacuum autoclaves, drying cycle optimization and curve sawing to ensure that little to no harvested material goes to waste. Additionally, the wood industry is leading the way with innovative ways of communicating about our products to users through Environmental Product Declarations. We are eager to see the farm bill changes fully implemented, and look forward to the interim guidance USDA plans to release in September to guide how wood products can show innovation when applying to the program."
