Codes and Standards for Wood Podiums in Mid-rise Construction, presented by Karyn Beebe
Mid-rise podium construction, with multiple stories of wood framing over a concrete first story, has been popular for many years as a way to take advantage of wood's cost effectiveness for the superstructure while maintaining a more traditional construction type below. Recently, some designers have chosen to forego concrete altogether and build the podium in wood—further decreasing their costs while speeding construction and creating less massive, more uniform buildings. This course will examine two very different projects, a luxury apartment complex and a senior housing/mixed use project. Design considerations related to the California Building Code (CBC) and AWC's Special Design Provisions for Wind and Seismic (SDPWS) and the use of wood podiums such as durability, fire protection, sound transmission and seismic loads will be discussed as well as detailing considerations for mid-rise wood construction.

Present and Future of Wood Construction, presented by AWC's Michelle Kam-Biron
AWC's National Design Specification (NDS) for Wood Construction 2012 is the dual format Allowable Stress Design (ASD) and Load Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) document referenced in 2013 California Building Code and used to design wood structures worldwide. Participants will learn about current significant changes in the 2012 NDS relative to previous editions. They will also learn about the future of wood construction with Cross-laminated Timber (CLT) and the inclusion of CLT in the 2015 International Building Code which will allow wood buildings to be built to higher heights under certain occupancies. In addition, to the code adoption, designers will learn about the first U.S. CLT Handbook that was released this year and an electronic copy is available for free via AWC.

Seismic and Wind Design Considerations for Wood Framed Structures, presented by Karyn Beebe
The overall strength of a building is a function of all of its components—roof, walls, floors, and foundation—working together as a unit. This course will provide a top to bottom overview of lateral design for wood framed structures. Topics include lessons learned from natural disasters, load path continuity, results of recent testing and significant changes from previous codes and standards. Examples of the three types of shear walls including Segmented, Force-transfer, and Perforated as outlined in AWC's Special Design Provisions for Wind and Seismic (SDPWS) will be discussed.

FREE WEBINAR - Prescriptive Residential Wood Deck Construction Guide (DCA6)

Date:
Time:

AWC Speakers:
May 30, 2013
1:00PM-2:30PM EST
12:00PM-1:30PM CST
11:00AM-12:30PM MST
10:00AM-11:30AM PST
Michelle Kam-Biron, Director of Education
Buddy Showalter, Vice President, Technology Transfer

This free webinar will provide an overview of DCA 6 along with its Commentary and include several examples showing application of the deck guide. DCA 6 includes guidance on provisions of the 2009 International Residential Code (IRC) pertaining to single level residential wood deck construction. Provisions contained in this document that are not included in the IRC are considered good practice recommendations. Based on the limited number of changes to deck provisions in the 2012 IRC, the DCA 6 2009 IRC version can be used in jurisdictions enforcing the 2012 IRC.

*** REGISTRATION IS CLOSED FOR THIS EVENT ***
