Does the 3x member framing requirement apply to shear walls designed only for wind?

The requirement only applies when the nominal unit shear capacity on either side of the shear wall exceeds 700 plf, and the structure is in Seismic Design Category D, E, or F, OR nail spacing of 2” o.c. or less is specified at panel edges, OR if using 10d nails penetrating into framing members/blocking at 3” o.c. or less. If the wall meets any of these requirements, then a 3x member is required, even if the wall is designed for wind rather than seismic.

The following FAQ is based on the presentation of DES412-1 – Seismic-Resistive Design of Wood Buildings .
