This article provides an overview of a bolt design example utilizing AWC'sā€Æ2015 National Design Specification® (NDS®) for Wood Construction. Connection design philosophy and behavior, an overview of 2015 NDS provisions related to bolt design including local stresses in fastener groups, and a detailed design example are included.

After reading this article, you should be able to:

  1. Describe the application of the six yield limit equations for dowel-type connection design
  2. Discuss when to utilize applicable adjustment factors for common bolted connections
  3. Illustrate the spacing, end, and edge distance requirements for wood-to-wood bolted connections
  4. Calculate the local stresses in fastener groups
